Married to a UK citizen

If you are married to a UK citizen, the requirements for naturalisation are:

You must have lived in the UK for three years before the application.
You must not have been out of the UK for more than 270 days in those three years.
You must not have breached immigration rules.
You must be of good character.
You must have adequate knowledge of the English language.
You must not have been out of the UK for more than 90 days in the first 12 months prior to the date of their application.

Not married to a UK citizen

If you aren’t married to a UK citizen, the requirements for the naturalisation application are different. These are:

You must have been in the UK five years prior to the date of their application.
You must not have been out of the UK for more than 450 days in the five-year intervening period.
You must not have been in breach of the immigration rules.
You must not have been out of the UK for more than 90 days in the first 12 months prior to the date of their application.
You must not have been subject to any time limits whilst in the UK and particularly in the first 12 months prior to the date of their application.
You must be of good character.
You must have adequate knowledge and level of the English language.
You must have the intention to make the UK your primary home.
