The Impact of Trauma on our Clients

July 25, 2023 By Cameron Shaw Family Law

‘The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.’ These are not my words; they are the words of Mahatma Gandhi. A functioning and open justice system is one of the bedrocks of a functioning and harmonious society. As Solicitors and Lawyers, it is imperative for us to realise the importance of our role providing access to and upholding justice. We need to help and support those less fortunate than us, and assist in any way we can so that there is an open and fair justice system. We need to be supportive and understanding so that when people need help we will be there.

Trauma Awareness Course

I have recently undertaken the Trauma Informed Lawyer Certification Course offered by the Law Society of Scotland. In my role as a Solicitor dealing primarily with Family Law matters, I have and do encounter clients at various stages of distress who have experienced trauma. It would be remiss of me to say that my clients are, on the whole, in a happy place to come to meet with me. I often describe my role as a Family Lawyer as being a distress purchase and it is clear that when people are under stress they may not think as clearly as they would in calmer circumstances.

The Trauma Informed Course has been enlightening in how it provided information regarding the science behind trauma and how it affects individuals’ behaviours and decision making. At Jones Whyte, we aim to be Solicitors throughout people’s lives in both good or bad situations. We genuinely are a Law Firm that is client-centred and will listen to and provide solutions based on what clients’ wishes and needs are. We are always there to support and the trauma informed practice is another way in which we can assist clients when they are going through specific trauma or distress.

Helping Clients

It is clear that times of stress, distress and trauma will be unavoidable for clients. However, by leveraging the skills we already have at Jones Whyte combined with trauma informed Lawyers, we are in a better place to assist clients in the circumstances they find themselves.

Inevitably, everyone will go through stressful periods in their lives, and the skills I have gained from the course will be immeasurable in how I can now advise clients in order to best support them in times of need. The skills I have developed through the course have strengthened my understanding of how to effectively support clients during their challenging times. I have acquired valuable techniques to try and alleviate trauma and prevent the re-traumatisation of clients.

At Jones Whyte, we are skilled practitioners who can and will support you through your hardest times.
