Deborah began studying law in 2010 at Stirling University where she achieved a BA (Hons) and LLB (Hons). Deborah then went on to study my DPLP at Dundee University in 2018 and graduated with the class of 2019, with the intention of becoming a criminal law solicitor.
After graduating Deborah spent some time working for a small local firm as a legal administrator dealing with criminal and civil works and after 6 months, was offered a traineeship with a small local law firm specialising in Private Client and Conveyancing.
Although this was not originally the sector that she wished to specialise in, Deborah accepted the offer and spent the majority of my traineeship dealing with Will writing and executries.
Deborah grew to enjoy the role that she was in and the work involved in writing clients’ Wills and attending to the estates of clients’ loved ones to ensure that the wishes in their Wills were followed through.
During this time, a genealogist began working in partnership with the firm to realise the estates of those who were perhaps estranged from their families and their estates were held with the Queen’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer (QLTR). This also helped her to understand what happened to estates where the deceased did not have a Will and had little family to speak of.
This experience and training during the initial stage of her traineeship were to Deborah’s advantage when a job opportunity arose at Jones Whyte. After deliberations with my firm and Jones Whyte, Deborah assigned my traineeship over in August of 2021 and has been working within the Estate Planning Team ever since.
“Within the Estate Planning team, I am able to work on the knowledge gained during the initial stages of my traineeship and continue to expand my understanding of the private client sector with the help of my colleagues.
One way in which I have achieved this is by undertaking training on additional products that can be offered to clients to benefit both them and their estates which includes the workings of Family Trusts.”
