I can’t resolve my separation during lockdown…can I?

May 19, 2020 Covid-19,Family Law

There is no doubt that the current situation within the United Kingdom, and indeed worldwide, has brought what we have come to know as “normal” way of life to a standstill. However, that doesn’t mean that the process cannot begin – whether you are in the situation where you wish to separate, resolve financial matters arising from your separation, raise a divorce action or reach agreement in relation to children of your relationship.

The first important step for many clients is the initial discussion with a solicitor. We often find people are very worried about their future plans, both financial and personal, and we are here to assist with both. We can provide initial advice so you understand your legal position and the matters which may need to be resolved in due course. We can discuss what you would hope to agree and the important mattes to you arising from your separation.

If you have been separated for some time, we can consider next steps. Are there financial matters which remain outstanding? How can we make progress with these while lockdown is in place? Can we offer advice as to the best course of action, whether that be progressing matters, or putting them on hold dependent upon your situation?

Finally, the courts may be running on a very limited footing but that does not mean the doors to justice are closed, and we can certainly advise in terms of all child law matters which may need to be dealt with as a matter of urgency.

Whatever your issue may be, please do not feel that you cannot take advice or start the process whilst lockdown is in place. This may be the very best time for you to evaluate what is important to you in terms of your future, and how best that may be achieved in the short, medium and longer term. Our team are more than happy to help and provide advice on an informal and formal basis, by telephone, video call or by email.
