Heir Uncovers Unexpected Inheritance

If you ever find yourself named in someone’s will, the bequest you receive is usually quite straightforward — such as a sum of money or a treasured memento. However, this is not always the case.

In a case recently reported by the BBC, a Frenchman who inherited a house from a family member discovered there was far more to the bequest than he first thought.

While moving furniture around in the property, he found a box of gold coins fastened underneath a piece of furniture, and another hidden inside a whiskey box. He then uncovered gold bars and ingots hidden in various places throughout the house. In total, the gold was estimated to be worth around £3 million.

The gold has reportedly already been sold by the lucky beneficiary, but the windfall may not be entirely good news. Under French law, he will have to pay inheritance tax of 45%. If it turns out that the relative who hid the gold had not declared it, the heir could also be liable for up to three years of outstanding taxes.
