Why City Centre Living Is Making a Comeback in Glasgow

September 12, 2023 Residential Conveyancing

A couple of weeks ago, the BBC published an article titled ‘Glasgow looks to bring back more city centre living’ highlighting Glasgow’s plan to build 1,350 new or converted flats as part of their long-term plan for Glasgow’s City Centre.

On the day the BBC released this article, city councillors voted in favour of the plan which is called the ‘Golden Z’. Due to the closure of major retail chains along Buchanan, Argyle and Sauchiehall Streets, Glasgow City Council are wanting to transform the city centre into a place that is “more resilient, diverse and green.” This doesn’t come as a surprise, given that property Consultancy Ryden reported last November that footfall is nearly 20% lower than it was prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At present, Glasgow City Centre has approximately 20,000 residents. If the plan to build these flats proceeds as envisioned, the population is likely to double in around 12 years. In this article it was revealed that this new way of living in Glasgow is designed to enhance connectivity, reducing the need for car usage. In terms of types of properties to be developed, the article mentions they need to suit a variety of occupiers, whether that be for “families, students or later living.”

Angus Millar, the council’s convener of city centre regeneration, stated: “It’s crucial we have a diversity of uses. We need more of a mix, a more sustainable mix, looking at retail but also food and drink, harnessing creative and cultural institutions we have in Sauchiehall Street bringing them down onto the street and also more residential accommodation in these areas.”

We’re excited to learn more about this ‘Golden Z’ project and will keep you posted on any new developments.
