Jones Whyte is delighted to announce that Lynsey Brown, Partner in our Family Law team, has successfully completed her solicitor qualification exams in England & Wales. Qualifying across two distinct legal jurisdictions is no small feat. The legal systems of Scotland and England & Wales differ considerably — from terminology to substantive law — and meeting the requirements for both demands not only a thorough understanding of each system independently, but also the ability to navigate their intersection with confidence and precision.

The process typically involves satisfying the requirements set by both the Law Society of Scotland and the Solicitors Regulation Authority in England & Wales, including passing additional exams and demonstrating relevant legal experience, followed by formal admission.

For Lynsey, this achievement marks a significant step in her professional development and results from sustained dedication to her career and a genuine commitment to expanding the level of legal representation she can offer clients. It places her among a select group of family law solicitors in Scotland progressing towards advising across both jurisdictions and reflects the forward-thinking investment in people that Jones Whyte consistently champions.

Who is Lynsey Brown?

Lynsey is a partner based in Jones Whyte’s Family Law department, where she advises clients across a broad range of family law matters. She has balanced her studies to sit the SQE exams in England and Wales whilst continuing to advise her clients at Jones Whyte, demonstrating her commitment to professional development and leadership within the firm. Her areas of expertise include:

  • Separation and divorce — guiding clients through the court process with clarity and sensitivity

  • Financial provision — advising on the fair division of assets and financial arrangements following relationship breakdown

  • Child contact and residence disputes — supporting parents and families through emotionally charged proceedings

  • Pre- and post-nuptial agreements — helping clients protect their interests before or during marriage

  • Cohabitation matters — advising unmarried couples on their legal rights and responsibilities

Lynsey also specialises in some of the most complex and sensitive areas of modern family law, including adoption, surrogacy, assisted conception, and fertility law. Her day-to-day work involves supporting clients through challenging situations with dedication and professionalism. These areas require not only legal knowledge but also empathy and understanding — qualities Lynsey brings to every client she works with, giving support and guidance throughout their legal journey.

Why Qualification Across Both Jurisdictions Matters

Family life does not always stay within borders. Whether it’s in relation to a couple who lived in England before separating and one party then relocates to Scotland or vice versa, a family with children living across different parts of the UK, or financial assets and property spread across both jurisdictions, cross-border complexity in family law is increasingly common — and consequential.

Previously, clients in these situations often required separate legal advice from solicitors in different jurisdictions, adding cost, complexity, and potential for inconsistency at an already difficult time. Upon formal admission, Lynsey will be able to provide joined-up, specialist guidance on both Scots law and the law of England & Wales, without the need to engage multiple legal teams.

Speaking about her qualification, Lynsey said:

“Having now completed my qualification exams in England and Wales, going forward I will be able to support clients whose circumstances involve more than one legal system, and provide clearer guidance during what can often be a difficult time without the need for clients to seek advice from multiple solicitors across jurisdictions. This strengthens our family law practice and ensures clients receive informed, specialist advice throughout the process. It will also allow me to expand my work in the field of surrogacy into England and Wales, and, going forward, enable me to provide services across the spectrum of family to clients both north and south of the border.”

Investing in People, Delivering for Clients

Lynsey’s progress towards qualification in England & Wales exemplifies Jones Whyte’s ongoing commitment to investing in the professional development of its team. As a leading employer in the Scottish legal sector, Jones Whyte is dedicated to supporting and developing its staff at every stage of their careers, from supporting traineeships to fostering professional growth of both early-career and experienced solicitors. The firm believes that when its people grow, its clients benefit — and Lynsey’s achievement is a direct reflection of that philosophy in action.

With specialists across divorce and separation, financial provision, child law, and the increasingly complex areas of fertility and surrogacy law, Jones Whyte’s Family Law team is equipped to support clients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives — with expertise and care.
