Douglas Cummings First Month as a Trainee at Jones Whyte

Meet Douglas Cummings, one of our new trainee solicitors who joined our team at Jones Whyte in September. It was great having the opportunity to catch up with Douglas and discuss how he has been getting on since starting his two-year traineeship program.

In this blog, you will gain insights into the tasks Douglas undertook in his initial weeks, discover the aspects of work he finds most enjoyable and learn what he is looking forward to in his traineeship with Jones Whyte.

What did you get up to in your first week?

“In my first week at Jones Whyte I assisted in the case handling of some of our larger personal injury cases. These fast-paced claims were entering a testing period and it was beneficial to be involved in their supervision so early on. This involved instructing Counsel, creating supportive documents and contacting clients.”

How was your first month at Jones Whyte?

“I have had a great first month at Jones Whyte. I was asked to attend procedural matters very early on. This early exposure gave me useful insight as to how solicitors and advocates operate in court settings.

My primary area of focus currently is handling personal injury claims. These claims vary from road traffic accidents, to accidents at work. I also get involved in the group action department and as these claims progress, I will see further responsibility entrusted on me.”

What aspects of work have you found to be most enjoyable?

“There are two aspects of working at Jones Whyte that I have enjoyed the most. Firstly, the helpfulness of fellow colleagues has made the transition into a full time trainee position very easy. There are so many people willing to help and it sends home the message of being a team. Secondly, I have enjoyed the responsibility that is vested in me. It is the best way to learn and I know that at any time, if required, I can ask for assistance.”

What are you most looking forward to?

“My future goals at Jones Whyte centre around personal development multiplied by teamwork. I am eager to enhance my confidence as a young solicitor while actively contributing to the growth of the firm.”
