Plan Ahead, For Your Family’s Sake
Most of the families we work with didn’t expect to need us when they did. A diagnosis came early. A parent’s confusion turned out to be the start of something. A bereavement landed without warning, leaving one person dealing with a house, a pension and HMRC in the same week as a funeral.
Acting while there’s time and capacity costs a fraction of dealing with the consequences when there isn’t. A Will done now might cost less than a weekend away. An intestate estate with three siblings and a contested house can swallow tens of thousands of pounds.
- A Will means your wishes decide who inherits, not Scots intestacy rules, which may not match what you'd choose. An out-of-date Will can cause almost as much trouble as no Will at all.
- A power of attorney keeps decisions in your family's hands. Without one, they face a court-appointed guardianship that takes months, costs thousands, and reaches far deeper into family life.
- A Will on its own is half the job. Put a power of attorney beside it and your family is protected whatever happens, in life as well as after it.
- Early planning preserves more of what you own, through reliefs and exemptions that only count if they're set up well in advance.
